Our thoughts on Estonia

Estonia has really surprised us, we didn’t quite know what to expect and we can honestly say we have loved touring the country. We loved the laid back atmosphere and at no point did we feel unsafe.
The roads were in great shape which may have something to do with EU money (according to all the signs we’ve seen) and have been a pleasure to drive. There have been a few kamikaze overtaking manoeuvres by the locals but don’t let that put you off. Most of the drivers are very courteous and believe it or not, four lanes of traffic stopped when we stood at the zebra crossing on the dual carriage way just outside Tallinn. There’s very little traffic on the roads even at peak times and I’m sure they’ve never experienced a “rush hour”.

There are lots of unattended fuel pumps for petrol, diesel and LPG where you pay for what you have first, by putting your card in the machine. It’s a flat country and very cycle friendly. We’ve seen new cycle paths being built even outside the towns. It’s very clean with hardly any litter anywhere. Two thirds of the country is forest and marsh land with agricultural land in between the populated areas.
The supermarkets are great, stocked with everything you need (apart from malt vinegar & Heinz salad cream haha) with a good selection of fresh fruit and veg etc. It’s cheap too! You don’t have to buy bottled water either, the fresh water is perfectly drinkable. 90% of the Estonians spoke English and those that didn’t did their best to understand us.

All signs and information boards seem to be in English too (in the towns we visited)

I would say the only downside would be the piggin critters!! Little blood sucking horrors. It could be the time of the year who knows. We used Avon ‘skin so soft’ as a deterrent and it did work. We wished though we’d bought a plug-in mosquito repellent or something similar with us.

There are no Motorhome facilities (ie. service stations) outside of campsites which is a shame but who knows what the future will bring.
